Purpose of the Examination
The SAB determines the qualifications, experience and training programmes which are to be recognised for registration as specialists under the Medical Registration Act, and grants Certificates of Specialist Accreditation to persons who meet these requirements. To receive the Certificate of Specialist Accreditation in a specialty, a doctor must meet the graduate medical education training requirements, demonstrate clinical competence in the care of patients, meet the licensure requirements with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC), and pass the required postgraduate examinations.
The Emergency Medicine Examination (EM Examination)
The EM Examination, comprising 2 components, shall be the exit examination for Emergency Medicine residents.
- EM Examination (MCQ) will comprise 250 multiple-choice-questions (MCQs). This is administered for residents who have completed 36 months of residency training.
- EM Examination (Clinical) comprises of Part A (Critical Appraisal Paper/ Teaching Viva) and Part B (Short-Answer Question/Clinical and Admin Vivas).
Part A will be administered not earlier than 12 months before the date of completion of R5 senior residency.
Part B will be administered not earlier than 6 months before the date of completion of R5 senior residency.
Only residents who have attained a pass in the Short Answer Questions will be allowed to proceed with the Clinical Vivas. The passing mark for each clinical viva station is set at 60% and residents are required to pass 3 out of 4 stations. Failing the clinical viva component would mandate the resident to re-obtain a pass in the Short-Answer Questions during the subsequent attempt.
Either EM Examination (MCQ) or EM Examination (Clinical) may be undertaken first, provided the eligibility of the respective examination is met.
The EM Exit Examination is mandatory for Emergency Medicine Residents for exit certification, subject to completion of required postings and attestation by the Programme Directors.
